Citadels and Motorbikes

On our first day in Hue we did a little relaxing by the pool and then had a guided tour of the city's Citadel. This was once a magnificent city which was systematically destroyed, firstly by the French during their occupation of Vietnam and finished off by the Americans during the Vietnam war. We did get to see impressions of what the parts of the Forbidden City, resided in by Royalty, may have looked like.In the evening we ate in a local restaurant, run by a deaf and mute man and his family - Lac Thien (I hope I have spelt it right). The food was great and we were all given ingenious bottle openers made by the owner. Our second day in Hue was one of the highlights of our trip. We all boarded mopeds with drivers and were driven around Hue. We sailed on a dragon boat to a temple and were picked up by our bikes which took us bunkers used by the French and Americans, which provided a great view over the Perfume River. Then we drove to a mausoleum and roasted in the stifeling heat. Lunchtime was a treat. We ate a vegetarian meal at a Nunnery, and then had naps on a cool tiled floor with pillows - how civilised! In the afternoon we visited a lady who made conical hats for a living, even though she only had one hand. The real highlight was riding through the narrow backstreets where children rushed out of their houses to meet us and slap our hands as we rode passed. We got to places most tourists never even come close to. It was great.Ads by GoogleHue VietnamVisiting Hue?
